Fred DuVal

Fred DuVal is the President of DuVal and Associates, a consulting firm he founded in 2001 to offer strategic advice on government affairs. Over the years, he has worked with many clients, including major corporations like Pfizer, Aetna, and UBS, helping them navigate complex policy landscapes in Washington, D.C., and across state capitals. Currently, he serves as a Regent on the Arizona Board of Regents, a position to which he was first appointed by Governor Janet Napolitano in 2007 and reappointed by Governor Doug Ducey in 2018. He is the first Regent in Arizona's history to be appointed by governors from both major political parties, reflecting his ability to work across the aisle. He has also held the position of Chairman twice, in 2011 and again in 2023. His leadership on the Board has been marked by several transformative initiatives, including co-chairing the “Getting AHEAD” project and creating AZtransfer.com. This tool facilitates credit transfer between Arizona’s community colleges and universities. Beyond his work as a Regent, DuVal has contributed significantly to Arizona’s higher education landscape with initiatives like the Arizona Teachers Academy and the Arizona Healthy Tomorrow initiative, which aims to expand medical education in the state. He also founded the National Institute for Civil Discourse at the University of Arizona in response to the tragic shooting of Rep. Gabby Giffords, fostering dialogue and collaboration across political divides. DuVal’s career has also extended to national politics. Appointed by President Bill Clinton, he served as Deputy Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Affairs, where he managed critical relationships with governors and other elected officials while coordinating welfare reform, education, and transportation policies. He also played a vital role in the 1996 Clinton/Gore campaign and served as Deputy Chief of Protocol for the U.S., overseeing high-profile diplomatic events. An author and regular columnist for the Arizona Republic, Fred DuVal has written extensively on issues ranging from politics to Arizona’s unique cultural identity. He is a longtime advocate for the state’s communities and enjoys annual hikes in the Grand Canyon with his wife, Dr. Jennifer Hecker DuVal, and their two sons.
